Coast 2 Coast - Day Two

3rd june 2018

Low Cock How to Rosthwaite

First off the weather was absolutely beautiful and the views were stunning!

We made our way from the campsite into Ennerdale Bridge which is a very small village and at the time we walked though it was all asleep. We walked on to Ennerdale Water where the path takes you along the side of the water. (At this point I must point out that we are now in the Lake District and from now till we leave this part of the country we will see no signs for the Coast To Coast path! You need a map a GPS or a good guide to make your way through this part of the walk. It’s quite unbelievable that such a popular walk is not signed but hey it makes it an adventure!!) The path next to water goes on for 2 and a half miles and it is very rocky so you really have to watch where you place every step.

Once passed the water we crossed the river and walked into the plantation. This is a great walk and after a mile or so we stopped at High Gillerwaite YHA. Nice set up where you can make yourself a drink and buy snacks yourself and leave money in the honesty box. At the end of the plantation is another YHA, the Black Sail Hut. This is acutely in the middle of nowhere! There are a couple of pictures below (bench and cobblestones). You can serve yourself again and there is a toilet which is so clean and modern that when you in you forget how out of the way it is.

After this nice flat walking obviously there is a climb, a steep climb. This is for a mile and it’s tough going. Once you’ve reached the summit the decent is through an old slate mine down to Honister Hause. A brilliant cafe is at the bottom with excellent food and people!

After a bit more climbing we then turned of for Stonewaite for our campsite Chapel House Farm Campsite  This was a great site with really good amenities.
